FOUR TYPES OF WRITING

Dr. Hensley recently shared with us during faculty meeting that he would like us to focus on all four purposes for writing in all classrooms during the course of the week.

  • WRITE TO DEMONSTRATE LEARNING -- Students will show what they know through their writing.
  • WRITING TO LEARN -- Students will write to gain knowledge.
  • WRITE TO PUBLISH -- Students will write to publish for an authentic audience.
  • WRITE TO REFLECT -- Students will write to reflect on what they are learning.
One of the ways that the fourth grade team will be responding to this is through our Friday WRITING TO DEMONSTRATE LEARNING assessments. Each Friday, we will concentrate on one content area.  Students will read a text, answer a few multiple choice questions, a short answer question or two, and then an extended or constructed response question.

Below is just one example of such an assessment.
